I Believe Homosexuality is a Sin...But it's Not My Fault

I believe homosexuality is a sin.

In today's culture, that statement sounds as backward and narrow-minded as if I said, "I'm pro-slavery" or "women shouldn't vote." When viewed through the lens of today's culture, a stance against homosexuality is synonymous with homophobia.

More than just backward and narrow-minded, it's considered hateful and evil.

'Baby, It's Cold Outside,' #MeToo, & The Sexual Revolution

“Oh boy, they’re at it again!” That was the reaction I saw all over social media when a radio station decided to stop playing “Baby It’s Cold Outside” for fear that it encouraged date rape. The ensuing discussion was interesting. Should the song be banned? Does it encourage abuse? Is this another example of #MeToo going overboard? Or, is this our demons finally catching up with us? Are we being oversensitive? Or has reckoning day finally come?

I voted for Trump.

There, I said it. It’s true. In 2016, I voted for Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton. And I think I’m still ‘ok’ with my decision. But this isn’t an article about how Christians should have voted in 2016 or how they should vote in the future, although that is a very controversial topic (there are different views even among the four of us here at PtP). This is an article to Christians who voted for Trump (like myself). Since Election Day, I’ve seen something troubling among Christian Trump supporters. I’m sure you’ve seen it too.

It says something about the state of our Christian culture that blog articles like "Why Christians Should Avoid Watching Rape Scenes” and "Should Christians Watch Game of Thrones?” even need to be written. Yet, with the popularity of original content on Netflix, Hulu, HBO, etc., Christians are confronted with more and more entertainment options that include far more graphic sex and violence than what has been traditionally allowed on TV and in movie theaters. Unfortunately, these questions must be asked.

Recently, Kevin DeYoung wrote a short article on Gospel Coalition entitled, "I Don't Understand Christians Watching Game of Thrones." It was concise and biblically informed, yet some of the responses on Twitter from those who disagreed with him were perplexing.  Even if you disagree with my conclusions, hopefully these three excuses aren't of your reasoning:

Don't Worry World, Christians Will Tolerate Homosexuality Soon Enough

Dear World:

I’m sure you’re quite fed up with the intolerance of Christians toward homosexuality. Perhaps you’re wondering when we’re finally going to catch up with the rest of society. If so, I just want to give you a word of reassurance. We’ll tolerate homosexuality soon enough. Just give us some time.

First of all, it’s not surprising that we oppose it. Although the Bible never condones hatred of other people, it does say that Christians are supposed to be intolerant of all sin, including homosexuality. But frankly, we don’t follow this rule very well.
